Manchester United discussing possible Mason Greenwood loan to Atalanta
Mason Greenwood has not played for Man United since January 2022 and is under contract until 2025.
Atalanta are interested in signing Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United.
United football director John Murtough has held extensive talks with Atalanta officials and has discussed a possible deal to sign striker Rasmus Hojlund and loan Greenwood to the Serie A club.
Roma manager Jose Mourinho is not interested in signing Greenwood, having given him his first experience of senior football when he named Greenwood in United’s pre-season tour squad in 2018.
United have decided to loan Greenwood, 21, as Erik ten Hag is reluctant to sell the forward. Greenwood is contracted to United until 2025 and the club have the option of an additional year.
Greater Manchester Police announced on February 2 that Greenwood “no longer faces criminal proceedings”. Greenwood had been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.
The Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood and United have been conducting their own process as they “determine the next steps”.
United have spent five months mulling over Greenwood’s future and a club source insists they are focused on settling on an outcome before next season begins.
Greenwood last played in the 1-0 win against West Ham on January 22, 2022. He has not returned to United’s Carrington training complex since the charges were dropped five months ago. In recent photographs, he was pictured training privately.
